Getting to Know More about Babies and Sleep

The sight of babies in their sleep can be heart warming. But parents know about babies and sleep isn’t always peaceful for them. Babies frequently moan, groan, whimper, and kick in their sleep.

Parents know the importance of observing babies sleep cycle. You may have observed that a baby’s breathing occasionally pauses when he’s asleep. Sometimes he suddenly jerks awake. Sometimes he grinds his little teeth. He rocks back and forth or bangs his head against the side of his crib.

While babies sleep disorders happen sometimes, the behaviors mentioned above are common and usually no cause for concern. But it helps to know a bit more about babies’ normal sleep behaviors so that when something is wrong, you know what to do.

First you should take note of the rhythm of your babies breathing changes as he sleeps. You might notice that he breathes more rapidly for a while then changes to slower speed. Then he pauses for up to 15 seconds before resuming his normal breathing pattern.

Stay calm. This is not one of babies sleep disorders. Doctors call this “periodic breathing.” It’s common in babies until they are about 6 months. It’s when your baby is older than 6 months and he still shows the same breathing pattern that you should talk to his doctor about it. Doctors know more about babies’ sleep cycle.

Pediatricians said an infant’s breathing may follow this pattern up to 5 percent of the time when he’s asleep. Babies who were born prematurely may breathe this way as much as 10 percent of their time asleep.

Stay calm, too, if your baby’s hands and feet and the skin around his mouth to be bluish. It’s not unusual. But if it’s your baby’s forehead or the trunk of his body that turns blue, he may be having difficulty getting enough oxygen.

It always helps getting a daily dose of helpful information about your growing child. But don’t trust yourself alone every time. There are people out there especially trained about babies and sleep. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. After all, it’s your baby’s life that’s at stake.
